Development of glass structures

These series of initiatives related to glass block assemblage and construction, and the method of realizing new challenges through repeated experimentation, have earned Yamashita a high reputation in Japan and abroad, becoming one of his trademarks.
Having gained a great deal of knowledge about glass, Yamashita has also taken up the challenge of using thin glass sheets as structural, aesthetic elements. These are the glass bathroom in Denpaku The Beachfront MIJORA, where the roof is supported by two glass sheets arranged in an L-shape, and the Kobo Reisui Sauna, which is a combination of three panes of glass combined at different angles, which was an addition in Denpaku Komatsu in Ishikawa Prefecture.

The ‘Church Project’ also proposed a structure combining glass blocks with ‘earth bricks’, which were developed at a later stage.

The challenges to use these transparent materials such as glass and glass blocks as both structural and aesthetic elements is sure to be continued in our future projects.
